Organized by UMBC's Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture, this seminal exhibition illuminates Rand's role as a major figure at the epicenter of twentieth-century design. Original work, photographic reproductions, and a contextual timeline demonstrate the breadth of the great American designer's output over a sixty year career. The exhibition examines his impact on modern communication practice and theory as well as his continuing influence on American visual culture today.
The exhibition features posters, advertisements, books and book cover design, identity systems for corporations and institutions such as IBM, UPS, ABC, Westinghouse, NeXT Computer, Cummins, Morningstar, Yale University Press and UCLA Extension. The exhibition also showcases children's books he illustrated, the film “Conversations with Paul Rand” and some surprises.
The exhibition is curated by Franc Nunoo-Quarcoo, Professor and Chair, Department of Visual Arts, UMBC and author of Paul Rand: Modernist Design.
Lenders to the exhibition include Yale University's Sterling Library and several private collections.
